Tel Aviv opera drops plans for Wagner

News image

The Tel Aviv Opera in Israel has abandoned plans to play a work by the German composer, Wagner, after protests by staff.

Israel radio said dozens of people walked out of discussions, after the Opera's musical director asked for a performance of an aria from Wagner's "The Flying Dutchman".

Works by the nineteenth century composer are widely banned in Israel, which views him as a forerunner of Nazi anti-semitism.
