The body of President Lech Kaczynski has been returned to Poland, following his death in an air crash in Russia on Saturday, along with dozens of senior officials.
Shocked Poles collected special newspaper tributes in Warsaw on Sunday, and a two-minute tribute was held, with people standing in silence as church bells pealed and sirens wailed.
As news of the accident spread on Saturday, mourners headed for the presidential palace in Warsaw.
A carpet of candles and flowers had spread outside the palace by Saturday evening.
At the scene of the crash on Sunday, some Polish visitors were overcome by grief.
The previous evening Lech Kaczynski's twin brother, Jaroslaw (right of picture), had himself visited the scene. A friend said he was "devastated".
Polish soldiers meanwhile attended a special Mass in the capital. Among those killed in the crash was the Chief of General Staff, Gen Franciszek Gagor, and the heads of the armed forces, navy and air force.
Russian troops guarded the scene of the crash. The plane's data recorders have been recovered, and will be investigated for any further light they can shed on the cause of the accident.
Russian officials say the plane's pilots ignored warnings that they were flying too low in foggy conditions, the plane clipped trees on its approach to land, and broke up as it hit the ground.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk was comforted by his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, when he visited the crash site in Smolensk.
The remains of the 94 other victims were ferried by helicopter to morgues in the Russian capital Moscow.
