The far-right leader Eugene Terreblanche has been beaten to death on his farm in north-western South Africa.
"The leader" - as followers invariably called him - was a master of big gestures but was regarded by many as a national joke.
His Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging came to prominence in the 1980s and maintained its opposition to any diminishment of white rule.
Eugene Terreblanche turns himself in to police in Potchefstroom in 2000. He served two sentences - for assaulting a petrol attendant and for severely beating a farm worker.
He rode in to custody on his horse and mounted again as he left jail in Potchefstroom in 2004.
His party threatened civil war in the run-up to South Africa's first democratic elections but his influence waned afterwards.
But there is still a minority far-right fringe and Mr Terreblanche's funeral could become a rallying point.
