With so many homes lost, tent cities have sprung up in and around the capital Port-au-Prince.

Haiti is still burying victims. Telimene Josephe, 28, held a wreath at his mother's funeral in Port-au-Prince on Saturday. Elimene Josephe, 59, died on Monday of injuries sustained as a result of the quake.

At a US field hospital at Haiti's international airport on Saturday, Betina Joseph, 5, was tended to by her mother Denise Exima, 28. She had tetanus and doctors feared she would be dead within 24 hours if not evacuated.

Meanwhile, nearly 2,500km (1,500m) away in New York, volunteer lawyers were helping Haitian immigrants who arrived in the US on or before 12 January to apply for Temporary Protective Status.
