A race against time is under way in Haiti to search for survivors of the devastating quake that is feared to have killed tens of thousands of people.
The quake left houses in ruins, with many feared trapped beneath the rubble in the capital, Port-au-Prince.
The rescuers' task is bound to be grim - there are bodies lying in the streets and others entombed in the rubble of fallen buildings.
The Red Cross estimates that some three million people have been affected by the quake.
Some of the injured were ferried away by friends on pushcarts.
Many were receiving treatment in makeshift medical centres.
Others were being taken for specialised treatment elsewhere in a move co-ordinated by UN peacekeepers.
Emergency aid has begun arriving in Port-au-Prince but the needs are enormous, relief agencies say.
Search teams from a number of countries are also arriving in the capital.
Tent cities are springing up as most of Port-au-Prince lies in ruins.
Many Haitians are helping each other as they take refuge in makeshift shelters.
Among the challenges facing emergency workers is how to supply enough food and water for the survivors.
