North Tyneside saw some of the heaviest falls, including a rare covering at Tynemouth beach.
In Gateshead the Angel of the North towered over a white landscape...
..and was almost obscured by a blizzard.
But the freezing conditions didn't stop some from venturing out, like this dog walker at Wardley.
And it was the perfect opportunity to build a snowman... or five, in Corbridge, Northumberland.
