Much of Europe is experiencing a cold snap with heavy snow fall and plunging temperatures. In Venice, gondolas covered with snow sit idle.
Dozens have died because of the snow, including many homeless people. In Poland some 40 people died - many of them sleeping rough - while French officials said two people without shelter had died over recent days.
The snow caused transport chaos, grounding planes and stranding thousands who use Eurostar trains. Thousands were forced to delay their departure when service was suspended for three days because of the snow.
Airport and railway operators scrambled to clear runways and rails of ice and snow to allow services to continue.
In the UK, hundreds were trapped in their cars as they attempted to travel home for Christmas. Others abandoned their vehicles when roads became impassable.
Despite dangerously icy roads, one cyclist in Amsterdam was determined that his bike was still the best way to get around.
