The leader of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Patriach Pavle, has died at the age of 95. He had reportedly suffered from heart and lung problems, but his exact cause of death was not released.
His coffin was taken to a cathedral in the centre of Belgrade. The acting head of the Church broke into tears after announcing the death.
Serbians waited outside the church to see the coffin of Patriach Pavle, who had been leader of the Church since 1990.
Many, like this candle seller at Gracanica Monastery, cried at the news of his death. President Boris Tadic said: 'His death is also my personal loss.'
Bells tolled throughout Serbia as the government announced three days of mourning. A successor will not be announced for at least 40 days.
