An audacious weekend attack on Pakistan's army headquarters in the city of Rawalpindi has left 19 people dead.
The militants drove up to the heavily-guarded compound on Saturday in a white van, pictured right, and began shooting and throwing hand grenades.
The area around the compound was sealed off as troops tried to isolate the attackers. Six soldiers and four militants died in the initial fighting.
At one point Pakistan's military said the situation had been brought under control...
...but a second group of gunmen infiltrated the compound and took dozens of hostages.
As troops moved in on Sunday morning to free the hostages, the authorities were clearlly expecting heavy casualties. In the event, three hostages, two soldiers and four suspected militants were killed.
Pakistan's military said the operation was now over and there were no militants left in the compound. One badly wounded suspect was taken alive.
