World leaders have been addressing the 64th United Nations General Assembly in New York. Among the more highly anticipated speakers was Barack Obama, in his first address to the assembly as US president.
Among the popular topics addressed by speakers was nuclear proliferation, climate change, the global economic crisis, wars, poverty. Speaker after speaker urged action to combat them.
Ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya was on the list of speakers but failed to appear - he has been holed up in Brazil's embassy in the Honduran capital since Monday, demanding his reinstatement to the presidency.
Family members of the speakers watched appreciatively - such as Louis Sarkozy and Carla Bruni, son and wife of the French president.
Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi condemned the "unfair" and "feudal" UN Security Council. He also chastised some audience members for falling asleep during his speech, which at 90 minutes far exceeded his allotted time.
Outside, there was a mixed reception for Col Gaddafi. Some welcomed him, but others protested angrily, reflecting controversy over the case of the Libyan man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing.
Other demonstrators targeted the Iranian delegation, amid continuing anger over the outcome of Iran's disputed 12 June presidential elections.
