Firefighters in Greece are continuing their battle against wildfires that have destroyed thousands of acres of land and dozens of homes.
A state of emergency is in place in the region around the capital, Athens, where tens of thousands of people have fled their homes.
Almost 2,000 firefighters have been deployed in an effort to contain the fires which ripped through pine forests and olive groves.
The firefighters have been joined in some places by residents desperately fighting to save their homes.
Planes from Greece, Italy and France have been flying over the fires almost constantly, dropping water in an attempt to douse the flames.
By Monday afternoon, the intensity of some of the fires had decreased, helped by a drop in the wind.
But the respite has come too late to save some residential areas, including the badly hit Athens suburb of Agios Stefanos.
The fires, which began late on Friday, are the worst since those in 2007 which killed about 70 people. This year no casualties have been reported, but a local official has called them an "ecological disaster".
This satellite photo, taken on Monday by the European Space Agency, shows smoke from the fires drifting south from the Grammatiko region across Greece.
Thousands of trees have been destroyed and correspondents say that in some areas the once lush countryside now resembles a moonscape.
