A suicide bomb attack at an Islamic seminary in Lahore has killed a prominent anti-Taliban cleric, Sarfraz Naeemi. That attack and a simultaneous blast in Nowshera, in the north-west of Pakistan, claimed six lives.
Sarfraz Naeemi was outspoken in his condemnation of Taliban tactics such as suicide bombings. He openly supported the military operation in Swat.
Students at Naeemi's madrassa (seminary) mourned his loss. His sons said he had received death threats but had refused police protection.
The madrassa's shattered windows testified to the force of the blast.
At least four people died in Nowshera when an explosives-laden vehicle ploughed into a mosque during Friday prayers - causing the mosque roof to fall in. Scores were injured, and the local hospital appealed for blood.
Some suspect these latest blasts were staged by Taliban militants in revenge for the army's campaigns in the north-west.
Following the Lahore attack, hundreds of people joined protests to denounce the killings. "Down with the Taliban!", some shouted.
