Hopes are fading of finding any more survivors of the devastating earthquake in the Abruzzo region of central Italy.

Rescuers have pulled more than 100 people alive from collapsed homes in and around the town of L'Aquila.

But more than 200 people are confirmed to have died in the powerful quake, which struck in the early hours of Monday morning.

Rescuers worked through the night, pulling away concrete slabs with their bare hands to reach survivors from the disaster, which also left 1,500 people injured.

Tens of thousands of people have been left homeless, some spending the night in their cars while others went to tent camps set up to provide basic shelter.

Aid workers distributed basic supplies to the survivors, including milk, meals and hot drinks.

Field hospitals were set up to treat the wounded and doctors attended to patients in the open air.

Some residents returned to their homes to try to salvage what they could of their possessions.

Others who lost everything are waiting in the temporary camps amid continuing aftershocks.

Many ancient castles and churches are among those damaged or destroyed in the region's towns and villages.

Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said 15 people were still missing, and rescuers should know within 48 hours whether anyone remains alive under the rubble.
