There were emotional scenes at the Hoover factory in Merthyr Tydfil, as the last main production shift came to an end, with Gareth Williams letting his shirt do the talking. Nearly 340 jobs are being lost, as production is being transferred abroad. About 50 people took part in a march protesting against the closure, with some of them shedding a tear at the end of an era. Others were more contemplative about the passing of the plant which which began production in the town 60 years ago. The Italian-owned company said its Merthyr site could no longer produce goods competitively in the current market Many workers blame the firm's competition for its demise and the loss of their jobs.
