Firemen had the grim task of removing sewer covers to look for dead soldiers. Among the bodies found was that of Maj Gen Shakil Ahmed, who was chief of the BDR.

The revolt has raised questions about the stability of Bangladesh and underlined the fragile relationship between the civilian government and the military.

The BDR base in central Dhaka is located near this army base in one of the best known areas of the city - but the BDR's 70,000 personnel are paid far less than their army counterparts.

A bus is searched for mutinous BDR guards who it is believed may have fled their Dhaka headquarters wearing civilian clothes.

Relatives angered by the killings have been told that an amnesty offered to the guards to end the mutiny would not extend to those responsible for the killings.
