Israel is continuing its military operation in the Gaza Strip, despite frantic diplomatic efforts to clinch a ceasefire. The Israeli military said it was continuing to fire on Hamas targets, including tunnels used to smuggle weapons and rocket-launching sites. Meanwhile, Hamas fired more rockets into Israel. Medics in Hamas-held Gaza say at least 1,105 Palestinians - many of them civilians - have been killed since Israel began its offensive on 27 December. The Israeli military says 10 of its soldiers and three civilians have died and more than 230 troops have been wounded. In the West Bank, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon (left) urged Israel to "declare ceasefire unilaterally", while an Israeli government spokesman said he hoped the conflict was "entering its final act". At an emergency Arab summit in Qatar, exiled Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal (left), who is based in Syria, said the group would not accept Israeli conditions for a truce. Meanwhile, anti-Israeli demonstrations were held in many Muslim countries, with protesters condemning the Gaza offensive and burning Israeli flags. Security was stepped up in East Jerusalem, after Hamas urged Palestinians to take part in a "day of wrath" against Israel.
