In pictures: Ghana marks poll result

Ghanaian supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress have been celebrating the presidential election victory of party leader John Atta Mills in a tight run-off.

The run-off between Mr Atta Mills, above, and his rival Nana Akufo-Addo, was closely watched as Ghana remains a rare example of democracy in West Africa.

Ghana's electoral commission head Kwado Afari-Gyan announced the results in the capital, Accra, saying Mr Atta Mills won 50.23% of the votes while Mr Akufo-Addo won 49.77%.

Amid scenes of jubilation among NDC supporters on the streets of Accra, the outgoing President John Kufuor urged the two sides - who have both alleged vote-rigging - to respect the final result.

Mr Akufo-Addo's ruling party boycotted Friday's vote, in Tain, the last constituency to vote - but that did not stop the celebrations.
