Venice floods: Your pictures

You have been sending us your photographs of the floods in Venice. The waters reached their highest level for more than 20 years, before subsiding. This view of the waterfront is by Sonja Teelucksingh.

Sonja walked into St Mark's Square "and the water came up to my waist - but I'm only 5'3"." The yellow chairs piled in the middle of the square belong to an outdoor cafe.

"This stall in the Realto was the only one actually doing business" says Sonja.

This shot was taken by Joanne Anderson. She says the local authorities have urged people to stay indoors.

A submerged pavement sign, directing tourists to a restaurant in the San Silvestro district. Joanne says she was the last person to buy thigh-high waders, before the shop she was in closed early.

Other tourists had to make do with plastic bags to try to keep dry.

Thorvaldur Baldurs took this photo in the district of San Antonin, where locals say it "hardly ever" floods. He says his was the only ground floor apartment in the district which didn't get flooded.

John Hislop snapped this view of Murano island - where Venetian glass is made - from a private water taxi taking him to the airport. "We were lucky to get out".
