Exeter bomber Nicky Reilly grew up with Asperger's Syndrome which his mother says left him with a mental age of 10 and a tendency to developing passing obsessions. Reilly became obsessed with Islam before carrying out the botched bomb attack. His family say he had grown increasingly intolerant of them but had shown no signs of extremism. Reilly was the only person injured when his home-made nail bomb exploded in the city-centre restaurant. The attempted suicide bombing at Giraffe shocked Exeter's usually peaceful community. Reilly was caught on CCTV footage as he entered the restaurant. He was seen buying a drink and sitting at the bar before heading to the toilet. Whilst preparing the device in the cubicle, it unexpectedly exploded, injuring Reilly but no-one else. Reilly had made his bombs in glass bottles, using caustic soda and kerosene, which he then filled with about 500 nails. Police went to Reilly's home to investigate the bombing and quickly concluded he had been "radicalised" by extremists. Reilly, who appeared in court under the name Mohammad Rashid Saeed-Alim, admitted the failed suicide attack.
