Republicans have rallied behind their presidential hopeful John McCain and his running mate Sarah Palin - on the second day of their national convention in St Paul, Minnesota. US First Lady Laura Bush was among the first speakers to the forum, after most of the first day's events were scrapped because of Hurricane Gustav. Speaking via video-link from Washington, President George W Bush said Mr McCain was "ready to lead" and protect America. Former President George HW Bush and his wife, Barbara, shared the festive atmosphere inside the Xcel Energy Center. Former Senator Fred Thompson praised Mr McCain's courage and honour, retelling the story of his capture during the Vietnam war. Delegates were clearly in high spirits, loudly cheering the speakers. ...while some were heaping praise and smiles for wearing "party" outfits... Outside the convention venue, anti-war and anti-poverty protesters held their march.
