Hurricane Gustav is moving inland from the US Gulf coast after the worst of the storm missed New Orleans - the city ravaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Gustav, which left nearly 90 people dead last week as it crossed the Caribbean, has now been downgraded to a tropical storm, but is still leaving a trail of destruction throughout Louisiana.

Despite surging sea levels, flood defences are holding. But a number of buildings suffered structural damage in the strong winds, and power supplies were cut to more than 800,000 people.

Officials in New Orleans say a full assessment of damage will be made before advice is given on when the 200,000 people who fled the city will be allowed back.

US President George W Bush said it was too early to assess the damage Gustav had caused to oil installations in the Gulf, which account for about 25% of domestic output in the US.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Hanna - a Category One storm - has developed near the Bahamas in the Atlantic.

Hanna has caused widespread flooding in Cuba, Puerto Rico and northern parts of Haiti, where police say 10 people were killed in the town of Gonaives.
