In pictures: Kerrang! awards

Metallica were awarded for their contribution to heavy music at the Kerrang! Awards in London on Thursday night.

The night was hosted by Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian, pictured with his guest. Eight of the 13 award winners voted for by readers of Kerrang!

Newly reformed rap-rock band Rage Against The Machine won the Hall of Fame award.

American band 30 Seconds To Mars, fronted by actor Jared Leto, picked up two awards: Best Single and Best International Band.

Welsh rockers Bullet For My Valentine were named best British band.

Slaves To Gravity won the best British newcomer trophy.

Slipknot collected the Kerrang! Icon award. The band have pulled out of this weekend's Reading and Leeds festival after drummer Joey Jordison broke his ankle.

Avenged Sevenfold picked up best album for their self-titled fourth album.

Finnish band Turisas turned up to the awards ceremony, which was given the theme Garden of Unearthly Delights.

Biffy Clyro were nominated in the best British band category, but went home empty-handed.
