Russian tanks remain deep inside Georgian territory despite a ceasefire deal. Russian forces are thought to control much of Georgia's main east-west highway. The Russians are still there despite a ceasefire agreement stipulating that forces should pull back to the positions they held before the conflict broke out on 7 August. The US, which backs Georgia, has demanded the immediate withdrawal of Russian soldiers from Georgian soil - but Moscow says it needs to ensure adequate security arrangements are in place first. Tens of thousands of people have fled the violence - such as these refugees in a shelter in the Georgian capital, Tbilisi. Other fleeing families, such as this one which arrived at a hospital in Gori, tell traumatic tales of seeing dead bodies in the road and torched homes along the way. In Gori, there were chaotic scenes as vehicles carrying humanitarian aid were besieged by people in desperate need of supplies. Behind the harrowing individual tales of destruction and want, analysts see a clash between the US and Russia reminiscent of old Cold War divisions.
