Funerals continued on Tuesday for those killed in the conflict over South Ossetia. Here, the son of a Russian soldier killed in Tskhinvali stands by his father's coffin in the town of Zavodsky.

In the hours before Russia declared an end to military operations, an artillery strike on the Georgian town of Gori killed several people.

This woman in Gori was distraught after her house was hit by a shell. The town, close to South Ossetia, was used by Georgia to launch its military operation last week.

Photographers followed Russian troops into Tskhinvali to record the damage to the South Ossetian capital.

Wrecked tanks, at least some of them Georgian, littered the streets as Russian troops and Ossetian fighters wandered around.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy (left) met his Russian counterpart, Dmitry Medvedev, in Moscow, where they announced that a French-brokered peace plan had been agreed by Russia.

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili rallied his supporters in Tbilisi to accuse Russia of "heartless destruction" of Georgian citizens.

Tens of thousands of people waved Georgian flags and applauded the president's speech.

Meanwhile, in Abkhazia, Georgia's other breakaway province, separatist fighters relaxed after Georgia pulled out its remaining forces.
