A convoy of Russian troops rumbles through the mountains near the South Ossetian village of Dzhaba. Russia has sent hundreds of tanks, armoured personnel carriers and other military vehicles into the conflict zone over the past few days. There has been an influx of refugees, including this child waiting to be registered, from South Ossetia into Russia. Georgian soldiers in the strategic Georgian town of Gori, where troops are being deployed before heading to the frontlines. A group of irregular ethnic Ossetian fighters wait to cross the border into the Georgian breakaway region of South Ossetia, in support of Russian troops. Civilians across the region have been caught up in the violence. A Russian soldier injured in fighting with Georgian troops is given medical assistance in the town Dzhava, South Ossetia. A Russian television channel shows a dead Georgian soldier lying on the street in Tskhinvali. The UN refugee agency believes that between 4,000 and 5,000 have crossed the border into Russia. The agency says about 2,400 people have fled to other parts of Georgia.
