Tens of thousands of people have turned out in Sydney to see Pope Benedict XVI, who is paying his first visit to Australia. The Pope is attending World Youth Day, a six-day gathering of young Roman Catholics from around the world. Early on Thursday he prayed at the tomb of Mary MacKillop, a nun who many Catholics hope will be named Australia's first saint. The pontiff received a formal welcome from Prime Minister Kevin Rudd before going out into the city. He was also greeted by representatives of the Aboriginal community, and chatted to one man as he travelled by boat across Sydney Harbour. A flotilla of vessels and policemen on jet skis flanked the boat carrying the 81-year-old Pope to the site of his main address. Huge crowds of people waited to see the Pope, including young Catholics from around the world. After his speech, Pope Benedict was due to tour the streets of Sydney in his popemobile.
