Security is tight in the Mongolian capital, Ulan Bator, in the wake of violent clashes over alleged electoral fraud.

International observers said Sunday's general election was free and fair, but opposition supporters say the result was rigged.

When preliminary results gave the ruling party victory, crowds of protesters gathered on the streets of Ulan Bator.

Thousands of people clashed with police, who used tear gas and rubber bullets to hold off the crowds.

Cars were set on fire and looting was reported at several locations across the city.

The ruling party headquarters was burnt and, as protests continued late into the night, scores of injuries were reported. At least five people were killed, a minister said.

Areas of the capital remained sealed off on Wednesday but calm had been restored and some shops were open, reports said.
