In pictures: Mandela concert

Former South African president Nelson Mandela was joined by celebrities at a concert in London's Hyde Park to celebrate his 90th birthday and promote his HIV/Aids charity, 46664.

As many as 50,000 people, including the Queen, attended the celebration concert which was headlined with acts such as the Sugababes, Razorlight and Amy Winehouse.

Formula One star Lewis Hamilton introduced the Sugababes, describing it as an "honour and a privilege" to be at the concert.

The South African Soweto Gospel Choir, resplendent in brightly-coloured African dress, sang an a capella version of Happy Birthday Madiba - an honorific given to elders of Nelson Mandela's clan.

Actor Will Smith quoted singer Peter Gabriel as once saying: "If the world could only have one father, the man that we would choose to be our father would be Nelson Mandela."

Singer and X Factor winner, Leona Lewis, said the feeling of singing at the birthday celebration of a man who as a child she and her family had sung songs about, was indescribable.

Reggae singer Eddy Grant's rendition of his hit Gimme Hope Jo�hanna was met with lively dancing and singing along to the song's lyrics.

Singer Annie Lennox also performed at the Free Nelson Mandela Wembley concert 20 years ago. She described the impact of HIV/Aids on the South African people as a "virtual genocide".

Simple Minds singer Jim Kerr also performed at the 1988 concert. He said the mood was very different 20 years on. "I was angry the last time. It was very much a protest concert. This is a joyful occasion."

The finale of the concert saw the night's performers crowd onto the stage. Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday is on 18 July, he has said this is the last visit he will make to the UK.
