In pictures: Lorry fuel protest

Hundreds of lorry drivers and haulage firm owners angry at fuel price rises have protested in London and along the M4 in Wales.

A convoy closed the A40 into the capital, as truckers from across the country parked up and made their way to a rally at Marble Arch.

In Wales, more than 100 drove from Cross Hands, Llanelli, towards Cardiff. Police restrictions meant they handed a petition to Welsh Assembly members at a service station outside the city.

Hauliers say high diesel prices and a planned 2p fuel tax rise are driving firms out of business and they want a rebate to enable them to compete with foreign firms.

The government is also under fire from drivers and MPs over plans to increase road tax on older, more polluting vehicles

But the government says oil-producing countries need to increase output, and fuel duty is lower than its 1999 level in real terms.

After the rally, protest organisers in London headed to 10 Downing Street to hand in their petition.
