In pictures: Fleeing S Africa unrest

Thousands of foreigners living in South Africa have fled their homes following a wave of xenophobic attacks which has left at least 42 people dead.

It is estimated that about 15,000 people have sought shelter from the violence.

About 1,000 of them are in a camp outside Primrose police station on the outskirts of Johannesburg. The lucky ones have found space in tents provided by the authorities.

However, some people have been forced to sleep outside.

Conditions in the camp are extremely basic. Here a man shaves in the reflection of his mobile phone.

Water is being provided by mobile tanks housed on trucks.

The violence began on 11 May in a township north of Johannesburg, before spreading to the city and the surrounding region.

Some of the refugees are Zimbabweans. Many of them have decided to go home, preferring to risk the violence there than to stay in South Africa.
