Beijing has deployed tens of thousands of troops to the affected areas to lead the rescue work. The quake - of 7.9 magnitude - struck on Monday at 1428 local time (0628 GMT). In Beichuan alone, 80% of buildings collapsed, killing up to 5,000 people. This boy was rescued from the rubble of a house in Dujiangyan. Residents negotiate a huge rock dislodged by an aftershock in the Mianyang area. There are harrowing reports of collapsed schools and factories across the region. Every second is vital in saving the lives of those trapped, China's leadership has said.
