Tornadoes and severe storms swept across three south-central US states over the weekend, causing destruction and killing at least 22 people. Missouri was the worst-hit by the storms, with 15 people confirmed dead across the state. The storms shattered a number of homes and businesses, in what President George W Bush described as "a sad day". In Oklahoma, at least six people died when a tornado flattened parts of the mining town of Picher. Authorities in Picher said a 24-street area of the town had been "virtually destroyed". Stunned survivors later sifted through the rubble of their houses to salvage whatever they could. At least one person was killed in Georgia, as storms moved east on Sunday. Officials warn that the death toll could climb as rescuers are continuing their search for survivors.
