Waves lashed the seafront at Porthcawl, Wales, before high tide as winds of nearly 80mph hit the UK. In Richmond-upon-Thames, Surrey, a woman was among many commuters who struggled to work in high winds. Large waves created by storm conditions crashed over buildings at high tide at Lyme Regis, in Dorset. In Exmouth, the heavy winds and powerful waves meant water spilled on to some roads, making driving difficult. The wind and rain forced many of those braving the elements to don winter clothing and carry an umbrella. The bad weather caused problems for drivers on the old Severn Bridge, where traffic was gridlocked. High winds and heavy snow meant treacherous conditions for drivers on the A66 in County Durham.
