Thousands of people have attended the Beirut funeral of pro-Syrian Hezbollah commander Imad Mughniyeh, who was killed in a car bomb on Tuesday. The funeral was held in the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital, a stronghold of support for Hezbollah. Mughniyeh's death has sparked vows of retaliation by senior members of Hezbollah. Many, including Hezbollah's leader Hassan Nasrallah, have blamed Israel for the killing. Here women attending the funeral procession shout anti-Israeli slogans. Elsewhere in Beirut, huge crowds of anti-Syrian supporters attended a rally marking three years since the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. People packed Martyrs Square in the centre of the city, where Hariri is buried. Hariri's death in a car bomb attack plunged the country into political turmoil, and eventually led to the withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon. His son and political heir Saad Hariri was amongst those who made speeches at the event. Many of Hariri's supporters blame Syria for his death, and some vented anti-Syrian feelings by stomping on images of Syrian President Bashar Assad. The two gatherings underscore the deep divisions in the country between the Western-backed anti-Syrian movement and the Hezbollah-led opposition. Security was extremely tight, amid fears of clashes between pro- and anti-Syrian factions.
