Storms have battered large parts of Britain, claiming at least one life, with gales and heavy snow showers hitting many areas. Severe gales have caused particular problems along coasts and on roads in northern England, Wales and Scotland. In Wales some homes are without power. Vehicles battled gale-force winds near Tebay, Cumbria, where a lorry had earlier overturned in the gusts of up to 70mph, killing its 45-year-old driver. The Forth Road Bridge, west of Edinburgh, was closed to high-sided vehicles, caravans and motorcycles after another lorry overturned in gales. County Antrim in Northern Ireland has already turned white, but the Met Office has warned everywhere across the UK may see snow over the coming days. Coasts have been hit badly, with Clevedon Pier in North Somerset seeing high waves. The Port of Dover, in Kent, closed to shipping movements because of 60mph gusts.
