Pilgrims circle the Kaaba inside the Grand Mosque in the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Millions of Muslims marked the last day of the annual Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam. After walking around the Kaaba at the centre of the mosque, pilgrims walk back and forth between the stations of Safa to Marwa. Pilgrims perform the ritual "stoning of the devil" at Jamarat near Mecca. Pilgrims throw pebbles at stone pillars representing the devil. The ritual has been one of the most dangerous points of the Hajj, the location of frequent stampedes. Two years ago, more than 360 pilgrims died in a crush. Pilgrims celebrated Eid al-Adha on Wednesday, the feast of the sacrifice. Mecca combines tradition with modernity. Here pilgrims are having dinner at a fast food restaurant in Mecca. Female pilgrims participate in the Hajj alongside men. Every Muslim has to perform Hajj at least once in their life, circumstances permitting. The Grand Mosque in Mecca is the most important in Islam. Muslims from all over the world pray towards the Kaaba at the mosque's centre.
