A cyclone has torn through Bangladesh, flattening several villages and leaving hundreds of people dead. By the time it reached the capital, Dhaka, it had lost some of its force.

This newborn baby, cradled by its grandmother, survived and was named Cyclone.

With tens of thousands of homes estimated damaged or destroyed, many families were forced to seek shelter on foot carrying what they could.

Hundreds of thousands of people were evacuated and many sought refuge in emergency shelters like this one near Mongla port, around 320km (199 miles) south of Dhaka.

Many people are thought to have been killed as falling trees levelled fragile houses made of thatch, wood and tin.

Elephants helped remove fallen trees that blocked roads across the country, frustrating attempts by the authorities to reach stricken areas.

At least 150 fishing trawlers, like this one, failed to return to shore and a UN agency reportedly said 1,000 fishermen were missing.
