French commuters have been struggling to get to work during a one-day nationwide strike by transport workers. The industrial action was called in protest against pension reforms proposed by President Nicolas Sarkozy. Most commuter trains and regional services were cancelled. Most of the Paris metro lines were running a drastically reduced service, leading to severe overcrowding. Parisians were left to find alternative means of getting to work, such as bicycles from the Velib public bike-share scheme. The industrial action has angered some commuters, who left anti-strike leaflets at one Paris metro station.
