At least 29 people died and dozens more are still missing after a bridge collapsed while under construction in central China.

Bulldozers and rescue workers have been combing huge piles of rubble where the bridge once stood.

The 320m bridge was being built over the Jiantuo river, connecting the hilly Fenghuang County with neighbouring Guizhou Airport.

Most of the victims were local farmers recruited for the construction project.

Anxious relatives watched the search for survivors from the riverbank.
