George Michael has become the first artist to play the new Wembley Stadium, in London, nearly seven years after the last concert at the old stadium.

The 90,000-capacity venue sold out - with some fans eager to show how long they had been following the ex-Wham! singer for.

The spiritual home of English football re-opened earlier this year after a �757m redevelopment scheme.

Michael performed hits from the Wham! back catalogue as well as solo hits like Fastlove and Too Funky.

Michael declared it was "an amazing honour" to be the first artist to play the stadium.

The singer, born in north London, said he had felt a "huge association" with Wembley since he was a child.

Muse and Metallica are also due to play at Wembley, which is also playing host to Concert for Diana and Live Earth this summer.

Fans, who had paid �75 for tickets, were vocal in their support for the former Wham! star.
