Homes and shops were evacuated in a County Durham market town after a van carrying welding equipment exploded, killing the driver of the vehicle. Fire crews worked to damp down the area and have sealed off the Market Place. Geoff Wearmouth was among residents who saw black smoke billowing above the quiet town. The explosion happened after the driver stopped near a shop. Geoff Wearmouth said a newsagent in the square had its windows blown out by the explosion. David Bushby sent this picture of the wreckage after the fire was put out by fire crews. Louise Gascoigne sent this picture of fire crews surveying the scene. Police cordoned off the square and debris was strewn on roads and streets after the blast, which shattered nearby windows.
