A week on from the deadly shootings at Virginia Tech, students and staff gathered on the university's Drill Field to hold a minute's silence in memory of the victims.

One white balloon was released for each of the 32 people killed by gunman Cho Seung-hui before he took his own life.

A thousand balloons in orange and maroon, the university's colours, were also released. They floated above Norris Hall, the scene of most of the killings.

Earlier, students with prayer flags gathered outside a dorm building, to mark the moment when two of their fellows were the first to lose their lives.

The mood on campus was sombre as students returned to classes for the first time since the shootings.

Elsewhere, in New Jersey, 20-year-old student Matthew La Porte was laid to rest in a flag-draped casket.

Mourners also gathered in Indonesia for the burial of 34-year-old civil engineering doctoral student Partahi Lumbantoruan, another of the victims.
