Sir Elton John threw a lavish party in London to celebrate his 60th birthday. He shared the event with artist Sam Taylor-Wood (centre), who has just turned 40.

Supermodel Elle McPherson was among the guests at the event in Shoreditch Town Hall in east London.

Sir Paul McCartney was dressed to the nines in a bow tie and tails as he arrived at the party.

Crash star Thandie Newton also attended, flanked by a Pearly King of London.

Hugh Grant put in an appearance a week after he missed out on ex-girlfriend Liz Hurley's wedding. Sir Elton was a guest of honour at the ceremony, and walked Hurley down the aisle.

Pop star Sting and his wife Trudie Styler joined the cavalcade of stars helping Sir Elton celebrate. The "Rocket Man" turns 60 on 25 March.
