Record snowfalls in northern New York state have buried parts of the state under thick drifts of snow. Six days of heavy snow squalls have blanketed much of the state, with many places seeing up to six feet of powder. Bitter conditions are continuing as residents try to dig themselves out. Driving conditions are less than ideal in some of the worst-hit areas. The governor of New York state has declared a state disaster emergency, as residents used a calm day on Friday to clear snow from their properties. BBC News website user Tom Miller lives in Mexico, Oswego County, where six to eight feet of snow have fallen. Blustery conditions made clearing existing drifts hard work. Twenty deaths across the US have been blamed on recent freezing weather, with the cold snap expected to dump more snow on the eastern US.
