More than 20,000 Bolivian miners are said to have taken part in the protest march in La Paz against proposed tax rises. Explosions shook some La Paz streets as some of the protesters threw sticks of dynamite. The police said more than 270 sticks of dynamite had been confiscated from the demonstrators. There were clashes in La Paz as some passers-by confronted the protesters. The miners - from independent co-operatives - say the proposed tax rise will place an unfair burden on them. A concession from the government, which offered to freeze the tax, failed to stop the miners from setting off on their march.
