At least 20 people have died and 340,000 have been left homeless by flooding in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta.

Residents have been forced onto high ground to avoid flood waters, which have reached 3m (10ft) in some places.

Homes have been flooded and thousands of people have rushed to try and save their businesses from the muddy waters.

The water has spread throughout a large area of the city, with densely-populated residential districts submerged.

It is the worst flooding in the city for five years, closing schools, cutting power and submerging roads.

A massive operation is under way to evacuate residents trapped by the deluge.

In places where the waters remain shallow, some have struggled to navigate a path through the city.

Days of torrential rain caused rivers to burst their banks, sending water cascading through the city.

Forecasters say heavy rain is set to continue for a week, with more flooding expected.
