A series of explosions hit several parts of the Thai capital, Bangkok, on New Year's Eve. The rare event sent police searching for clues as to who might have planted the devices. Initial thinking appeared to blame supporters of Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted as prime minister in September. The authorities cancelled major public celebrations to usher in the New Year. Many people made their way home as watchful police began enforcing the order. But these bar hostesses were among those determined to enjoy the countdown.
