Hundreds of people are feared dead in the eastern Philippines, after a powerful typhoon hit the country.

Typhoon Durian triggered torrents of mud that could have killed several hundred people, according to Red Cross officials.

Dozens of people are still missing, and the death toll is expected to rise further, the Red Cross said.

Rescuers are finding it difficult to reach isolated villages as many roads are inaccessible.

The storm uprooted trees, knocked out electricity and telephone lines and water supplies in some areas.

A number of passengers were stranded at Manila's airport after some domestic flights had to be cancelled.
