More than 60 forest fires are raging in Galicia, north-west Spain, including this one near the village of Ponte Bora. The long drought and dry winds have fuelled the flames, which threaten Galician towns and villages. Northern Portugal is also battling numerous blazes - here the flames have reached Valongo, on the outskirts of Porto. Portugal has mobilised hundreds of firefighters to protect Valongo and other areas. Three people have died in the forest fires in Galicia - and police suspect many were started deliberately. The army was called in to help villagers struggling to contain fires in Galicia - and some had to be evacuated. More than 3,000 ha (7,400 acres) of land has been engulfed by fire in north-west Spain. A firefighting plane tried to extinguish the blazes near Redondela in Galicia at the weekend. Catalonia in north-eastern Spain has also been hit by fires, such as this one near Girona.
