A series of explosions on trains in the Indian financial capital Mumbai (Bombay) has killed scores of people. An improvised rescue operation began at some stations as bystanders tried to find survivors among the dead. Rescue workers plucked bodies from the mangled wreckage of the train compartments. Authorities blamed "terrorists" for the attacks, which reports said targeted first-class compartments. The blasts happened in the evening rush hour, and TV pictures showed crowds of workers gathered at stations. The entire rail network was suspended, and as darkness fell, stranded passengers were facing a difficult journey home. But witnesses spoke of Mumbai pulling together, with local people handing out water and food. Security was also tightened in other Indian cities, including the capital Delhi.
