A series of explosions on trains in the Indian financial capital Mumbai (Bombay) has killed scores of people.

An improvised rescue operation began at some stations as bystanders tried to find survivors among the dead.

Some of the bombs exploded at stations, like this one at Mahim, causing extensive damage.

The blasts happened in the evening rush hour, and TV pictures showed crowds of workers gathered at stations.

The entire rail network was suspended, and as darkness fell, stranded passengers were facing a difficult journey home.

But witnesses spoke of Mumbai pulling together, with local people handing out water and food. (Photo: Urdu Times)

Elsewhere, trains bound for Mumbai were cancelled and some, like this one in Ahmedabad, were checked for bombs.

Security was also tightened in other Indian cities, including the capital Delhi.
